The seventh edition of Stockholm Craft Week, taking place from 1-5 October, has announced its largest and most varied programme to date. The week will open with a grand ceremony at the National Museum.
This year’s programme is notable for its concrete engagement with public debate, featuring exhibitions like Politik!, which puts craft on the barricades. The schedule also makes use of unexpected venues across the city, from an exhibition of metal sculptures at the Södermalm café Crum Heaven, to a show by the Glass Academy set in the mysterious, 300-year-old Groens Malmgård kitchen garden. Other works will explore themes of “offerings and vulgar ruffles,” challenging visitors’ perceptions of the craft object.
A focus on material exploration is also prominent. A “wood bonanza” awaits enthusiasts at the extensive Träet talar (The Wood Speaks) exhibition, while other events invite visitors to try weaving with recycled coffee packets at a creative After Work event at the National Museum. In a performance at Stockholm University of the Arts, artist Paola Torres Núñez del Prado will be weaving live with fresh moss, bridging art, technology, and science.
A full-day Nordic conference on international strategies will kick off the week, organised by the Swedish Crafts Centre and the Public Art Agency Sweden in collaboration with Norwegian Crafts and the Danish Arts Foundation. The conference will explore strategies for strengthening the internationalisation of Swedish crafts and highlight Nordic exchange opportunities, with a particular emphasis on a new report on artist residencies.
Premiering in 2019, Stockholm Craft Week is Sweden’s largest event for contemporary crafts. The event is run by Konsthantverkscentrum (The Swedish Crafts Centre), which is the project owner, together with Svensk Form and Konsthantverkarna.
