The School of Crafts ÚĽUV by ECA member ÚĽUV has been inscribed on the UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognition, announced during the 19th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paraguay in December 2024, marks a significant achievement for Slovakia.

Since its founding in 1999, the School of Crafts ÚĽUV has been dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Slovak crafts through education and skill-sharing. With regional centers in Bratislava, Banská Bystrica, and Košice, it supports local artisans and helps safeguard endangered craft techniques, ensuring that Slovakia’s rich cultural heritage thrives for future generations.

This is the first time Slovakia has submitted a proposal to the UNESCO Register, which highlights projects worldwide that embody the principles of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. Slovakia’s achievement stands alongside initiatives from Ukraine and Oman, also recognized in 2024, and is part of a broader global effort to preserve cultural diversity and traditions.

Slovakia’s active role in UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee, where it has been a member since 2022, underscores the nation’s commitment to cultural preservation on an international stage.
