This autumn, the Swallows’ Flight Festival, a new multidisciplinary arts event where tradition meets contemporary culture, will take flight for the first time in Budapest. On 25–26 September, the Buda Vigadó and its surrounding streets will come alive with music, dance, and communal celebration. The weekend marks a significant cultural milestone, serving as a joint celebration for the 25th anniversary of the ECA member Hungarian Heritage House, the 75th anniversary of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, and the 125th anniversary of the Buda Vigadó.
A hands-on experience
The festival offers a highly practical look at Hungarian heritage skills. Corvin Square and Dezső Szilágyi Square will transform into a large-scale Folk Arts and Crafts Fair, giving visitors the chance to see local artisans at work and purchase authentic pieces.
Alongside the fair, the festival features a strong lineup of interactive masterclasses where visitors can get hands-on with traditional techniques. This includes textile arts (workshops in indigo dyeing, ecoprinting, and bird-themed felting), heritage skills (practical sessions on traditional instrument making and soap-making), and interactive exhibitions (a multi-tactile “Storytelling Objects” display exploring the rich heritage network of the Carpathian Basin).
The wider cultural programme
Beyond the craft fair, the two-day event celebrates the end of summer with a packed schedule appealing to all ages. The streets will be filled with live folk music, guided exhibition tours, and evening dance houses. Highlights include a special Verbunk Day Gala, ritual theatre featuring light painting, and breathtaking aerial performances by the Flock Project.
