The European Union has officially registered Porcelaine de Limoges as its first craft and industrial geographical indication. While geographical indications have long protected agricultural goods and food, this milestone marks the very first time such formal intellectual property protection has been granted to a craft product across all member states.

Produced in the Haute Vienne region for over two centuries, the porcelain is celebrated worldwide for its exceptional quality. The registration formally recognises the advanced technical expertise and unique local craftsmanship passed down through generations of artisans. It guarantees that authentic pieces are manufactured entirely within the defined geographical area. This aims to protect authentic makers from imitation while helping consumers make informed choices about the origins of their purchases.

“The registration of Porcelaine de Limoges as the first craft and industrial geographical indication marks a historic milestone for both the European Union and France. Beyond protecting Limoges’ heritage and know how, the new system strengthens Europe’s voice in global trade, boosts EU competitiveness and opens up new opportunities for our regions, artisans and local communities.”
