The European Textile Network will bring its Visions & Traditions conference to Greece from 21 to 23 October, with three days of lectures, discussions, performances and visits centred on textile practice and education.
The European Textile Network
Founded in 1991 to connect textile communities across Eastern and Western Europe, ETN today brings together craftspeople, artists, designers, museums, universities, researchers and educators. This year’s programme looks at Greece’s textile traditions alongside questions facing the field today, including the place of textile education within art academies and the role of collaborative textile practice.
ECA on connections and weaving
The ECA will contribute to the programme through Secretary General Laura Miguel Baumann, who will present From Connections to Collective Strength: The Power of Networking in Crafts. Her talk will look at how craft organisations can share knowledge and resources, build collective capacity and strengthen cooperation across countries and sectors.
Also speaking is Lala de Dios Teijeira, President of the ECA member Asociación para la Creación Textil and former President of ETN. Her presentation, Weaving the Landscape and the Future in the Spanish Northwest, introduces Os Casares – Espacio Vilaseco, a former dairy farm in Galicia now used for workshops, residencies and seminars bringing together craft, art, design and research around fibre, landscape and rural life.
The main programme takes place in Athens, with a day in Mycenae and Nafplio, including the Basil Papantoniou Foundation’s Ethnological Museum. Workshops and guided visits continue on 24 and 25 October.
