The Crafts Council Gallery ‘Home For Craft’ – London’s newest public gallery space – will open its doors on 28th March, 2020.
A former 19th century chapel, located in the heart of Islington, the multi-use space has been created for exhibitions, events and study for both makers and the general public.
The Crafts Council Gallery will be open to the public from Saturday 28 March.
A lively programme of events, talks, workshops, and free world-class exhibitions will explore craft and making.
Visitors will be able to hear from leading makers, artists and designers, see objects from the national Collection and delve into our specialist archive of craft books and catalogues.
The space will also be a centre of exchange between makers and artists both in the UK and internationally.
The first exhibition in the Gallery will be the Maker’s Eye which will open to the public from 28 March – 20 June.
Maker’s Eye looks at the Crafts Council Collection through the eyes of 13 makers who have contributed to the shaping of modern British craft. Their very personal selections amount to 150 objects ranging from the functional to the conceptual, with dizzying array of scale, texture, material and colour.
They include a including a delicate canary yellow bowl by Lucie Rie, a knitted ‘pussy hat’ worn on the first Women’s March, one of the first chairs made using recycled plastics by Jane Atfield, and an industrial toilet mould by Stoke-on-Trent manufacturers Armitage Shanks.
