How do people in France view craft professions? Would young people consider a career in craft? And how large is the sector in economic terms? Two studies from the ECA member Institut pour les Savoir-Faire Français provide some answers.

How the French public sees craft

Conducted with Ipsos BVA in January 2026, the Perceptio survey found that 97% of respondents have a positive image of craft professions and exceptional savoir-faire. More than 90% see these professions as part of France’s cultural heritage and identity. The research also found that craft remains strongly associated with heritage and luxury. Less visible are the many professions working in architecture, fashion, transport, industrial equipment, restoration and other fields.

Young people and craft careers

There is also considerable interest among younger generations. Almost half of respondents under 26 said they were interested in pursuing a craft career, while more than 80% of parents would encourage their children to follow this path. Yet perceptions differ between generations: 39% of under-26s have a very positive image of craft professions, compared with 67% of people over 60.

The economic picture

The Institute’s second study, Les Éclaireurs, looks at the economic contribution of the sector. In 2022, France’s craft professions and exceptional savoir-faire accounted for approximately 234,000 businesses and 500,000 workers, generating a combined turnover of €68 billion. Some 96% of these businesses were micro-enterprises.

The two studies offer a picture of a sector that is widely appreciated but whose range of professions, career opportunities and economic contribution remain less familiar to the public.
