From 26-31 August 2025, the Aldeia do Xisto (Schist Village) of Cerdeira will mark the 10th anniversary of its Sasukenei kiln, a significant landmark in the history of Portuguese wood-fired ceramics. The celebration takes place in the heart of the Aldeias do Xisto region, a territory developed and supported by the ECA member, ADXTUR, and will feature a public program on the final two days.
The Sasukenei, or ‘Smokeless Kiln,’ was constructed in 2015 under the guidance of renowned Japanese master Masakazu Kusakabe. Its innovative design combines traditional firing techniques with greater efficiency and environmental awareness, establishing it as a symbol of sustainable artisanal practice and community collaboration.
While the event begins with a community firing for resident ceramicists, the program will open to the public on 30 and 31 August. Highlights include the opening of the “10 Years of the Sasukenei” exhibition (registration required), an international presentation on smokeless kilns, a concert, and the much-anticipated opening of the freshly fired kiln on the final afternoon.
The celebration pays tribute to the creative spirit that has defined the Sasukenei kiln over the last decade.
