The 3rd Catalan Biennial of Contemporary Craft has opened in Barcelona, Spain. It offers an exploration of the dialogue between art, craft, and technology, as well as the role of play as a tool for creation. It is organized by the Consorci de Comerç, Artesania i Moda (CCAM).
The Biennial centers on the exhibition Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art. Featuring the work of 22 selected craft professionals, the exhibition presents a broad range of disciplines, techniques, and materials. Ceramics, metalwork, paper, woodworking, jewelry, and textiles are placed in conversation with 3D printing and photography. Many of the works take the form of hybrid projects that incorporate sustainability, ecological reflection, and the use of locally sourced raw materials.
Developed under the curatorial concept Sewing Universes: Homo faber, Homo ludens, curator Ricard Planas examines the blurred boundaries between hand and machine, and between ancestral memory and emerging technology. The theme positions the artisan as both maker (faber) and player (ludens), proposing that the tension and intersection between art and craft create a fertile space for open-ended experimentation and creation.
The exhibition is open to the public from 4 November to 8 March at the Catalonia Crafts Center and is scheduled for an international tour thereafter.
